What is CBD?
What is CBD (Cannabidiol)?
First, let’s be clear: Cannabis, Hemp and Marijuana are NOT the same thing. CBD, also known as Cannabidiol, is a compound cannabinoid found mainly in the leaves and flowers of the Hemp plant. Its one of many cannabinoids found in Hemp. Unlike CBD's cousin THC it does not produce a euphoric 'high' or change someones state of mind.
To put it simply, CBD comes from the hemp plant. Hemp contains very low amounts of THC (the chemical that makes you 'high'), hemp in itself does not make you high. At Caneaze, the CBD we use is completely THC-free and we put measures in place to ensure this.
How does CBD work?
Over the last 40 years research has identified a complexes system in the body called the Endocannabinoid System (ECS). After multiple studies the result suggests that the ECS helps regulate many things including, brain function, mood, immune response, sleep, inflammation, stress, and pain.
What has CBD got to do with this? What CBD does is interact with this system to activate and inhibit certain cannabinoids. For example, CBD stops the body from absorbing anandamide, a compound associated with regulating pain. So increased levels of anandamide in the blood stream can limit the amount of pain someone feels.
It doesn't stop there, CBD has other effects on our body. It positively impacts the uptake and flow of other chemicals in the brain, such as serotonin, which helps regulate our mood. CBD has shown to stimulate serotonin pathways in the brain. An increase in serotonin levels can help provide relief for anxiety, depression, and migraine symptoms.
A natural medicine?
In 2007, an article in Dialogues in Clinical Neurosciences said "Despite the mild addiction to cannabis and the possible enhancement of addiction to other substances of abuse, when combined with cannabis, the therapeutic value of cannabinoids is too high to be put aside."
Modern research has shown it can:
- Reduce pain
- Help reduce side effects to chemotherapy in cancer patients
- Reduce muscle spasms
- Help reduce ocular pressure in glaucoma patients
- Lower blood pressure
- Relieve symptoms of asthma, anxiety, constipation, depression, epilepsy and insomnia
It is important to remember that clinical trials on humans have yet to take place.
Wait.. It can help with anxiety?
Dr. Cohen, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, says a lot of his patients swear by CBD in helping their inflammation, pain, and anxiety. Dr. Cohen himself started taking 50 mg a day in the hope that it might prevent later dementia on top of this, his migraines immediately disappeared.
The famous actor, Tom Hanks, has recently been quoted saying:
“The first time I ever tried CBD was to help soothe my anxiety. I was fed up with taking various pills to try and make me ‘better’... It wasn’t how I wanted to live my life anymore. So I gave CBD oil a try. It was a huge relief for me to feel like myself, yet the edge was gone. A bonus to the whole thing was the relief from various aches and pains I have. Especially arthritis in my knees. It immediately alleviated 90 percent of my pain.”
