CBD for Menopause: Research is showing it can help

What is menopause?

Menopause occurs when a woman no longer has a menstrual cycle, at some point in life all women will go through menopause. This experience results from the genetically programmed loss of follicles (structures that contain eggs) in the ovaries. The condition may also occur when the ovaries are removed surgically.

Menopause does not suddenly occur, there is a phase which tends to begin a few years before the final menstrual cycle called perimenopause. The average age of menopausal women today is about 51 years.

Few women get through menopause unscathed and the medical system is weirdly unprepared to deal with the symptoms of menopause. Our sympathy goes out to the women experiencing the highs and lows of this inevitable transitional period which can cause a large variety of the following symptoms.

. anxiety
. depression
. Aches and pains
. cramping
. migraines
. sleep disturbances . hot flushes
. mood changes
. Weight gain
. low libido

most of us probably don’t even think about the menopause until we are in it and then find ourselves unprepared to deal with it but scientific research has indicated that good quality cannabidiol (CBD Oil) can be useful for all the above symptoms. Menopause triggers inflammation and brain chemistry changes which are at the root of these symptoms.

So how does CBD help?

There is evidence that CBD can help neurotransmitters in the brain with uptake of serotonin, which is why it has an impact on anxiety, depression and insomnia, as well as hot flushes and night sweats that are triggered by neurochemical and hormonal imbalances.

CBD is also an anti inflammatory which is why it helps with joint aches and pains. It can also aid in maintaining a healthy metabolism therefore aid weight issues. Finally using CBD as a lubricant can also help with vaginal discomfort and low libido

How does CBD work?

It supports the endocannabinoid system, which we all have, through two sets of receptors (CB1 and CB2). It can maintain the chemical balance in the body whenever any of above issues occur. This explains why women struggling with menopause turn to CBD for help. Andrea McLean from Loose Women has said about CBD “ it has massively taken the edge off things with the flushes and it has made me less anxious because anxiety is a key thing for me”

There have been studies on the positive effects of CBD together with positive lifestyle changes have helped to alleviate menopause symptoms. Although the studies are limited? The World Health Organisation (WHO) has published a 2018 report that identifies CBD as well tolerated and non addictive with a good safety profile, stating that it could have a use in managing medical conditions

What should I look for when buying CBD?

CBD comes in many forms. Many CBD oils are organic and GM free, but there are many that are not and contain chemicals and heavy metals. It is very important to research your brand before buying.. other methods are, mouth sprays, capsules, gummies or a moisturising cream that can be massaged into the body. Another method is a vape pen. Vape pens deliver immediate benefits that dwindle within an hour whereas CBD oil takes longer to kick in but it’s effects can last 8 - 12 hours

Menopause is one of the top three reasons women use CBD, menstruation and sex are the other two. We are surprisingly unprepared to deal with the menopause symptoms but the sooner we notice and proactively respond to them, the better our future health
