Anxiety? These CBD products can eaze that for you

Overview

Cannabidiol or CBD for short is one of the compounds naturally found in Cannabis and Hemp plants. CBD unlike other compounds does not make you feel intoxicated or 'high'. It can however be used to treat some health problems, one of which is anxiety.

CBD oil works with a brain receptor called CB1. Receptors are small protein particles attached to your cells that receive chemical instructions from different stimuli and help your cells respond to them.

CBD and anxiety

The way in which CBD interacts with CB1 is not fully understood. However its thought that it alters serotonin signals. Serotonin is one of your body's chemicals and plays a role in your mental health. Low serotonin levels are common in depression. Not having enough serotonin can cause anxiety in some people.

The conventional treatment for low serotonin is prescription selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Medications like Zoloft and Prozac are both SSRIs. For some people CBD can be an effective alternative to these drugs for anxiety management. If you are using these drugs you should consult your doctor before changing treatment.

Research and evidence

Multiple studies point to the potential benefits of CBD for anxiety. For generalised anxiety which is less severe, the National Institute of Drug Abuse states that CBD has been shown to reduce stress in animal studies. The subjects of the study were observed as having lower behavioural signs of anxiety. Their physiological symptoms of anxiety, like higher heart rates, also improved.

Studies have also shown some benefits for other general forms of anxiety, for example social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. CBD has also been shown to help treat anxiety-induced insomnia.

In 2011, a human study on CBD looking at its effects on social anxiety disorder was published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology. Participants in the study were given either an oral dose of CBD or a placebo. With the results showing that those who took the CBD dose experienced overall reduced anxiety levels.
